How to turn loose actions into concrete outcomes. 5 relationship management hacks

As a follow up to my Q&A with Mike Cardamone: Managing & Structuring Relationships, I wanted to share some helpful hacks to streamline the process and maximize engagements with potential investors and — quite frankly — anyone you want to reach out to again, personal or otherwise.

Let’s face it — when you’re busy running a startup, keeping track of and maintaining relationships can be challenging. Below are some RM hacks i’ve found work for me as a founder.

(1) Use the “Company” section in your iPhone contacts to keep track of geography. Easily pull up a list of colleagues, friends, and business partners in the area you are traveling to or visiting.

(2) Ask questions and listen. Most people, including you, want to talk about themselves. Be the exception.

(3) After meetings, send an email with bullet points and action steps immediately, if possible.

(4) Keep notes in as few places as possible and maintain a standard way of recording this data that is efficient and easily actionable.

(5) Success is…throwing away your business cards.

1. Add your contacts’ geography in your smartphone
